Red Flag Warning 03/08/2017

March 8, 2017 01:19 PM

The Galesburg Fire Department, in support of the Red Flag Warning issued for today by the National Weather Service, will not be issuing any permits for recreational fires in the City of Galesburg for today (Wednesday) and tomorrow.  Given the relatively dry conditions, high wind predictions, and that we are in the pre-planting season of March with a lot of crop stubble as well as dead grass and brush left over from last fall, the potential for outdoor fires to quickly get out of control is exacerbated.  The predictions for wind speeds of less than 10 mph on Friday and throughout the weekend will allow for safer burning and the permitting of recreational fires is thus expected at that time.  This temporary ban on permits does not include recreational fires in approved outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, only recreational fires on the ground that require a permit as per the Fire Chief’s rules on burning found online.
