Recycling Carts

Curbside bi-weekly cart recyling program

On September 17, 2012, the Galesburg City Council approved a new five-year contract with Waste Management for the city’s solid waste collection services. Under the new contract, Council approved moving to an every other week, 26 times per year instead of 52 times per year, curbside recycling collection program utilizing wheeled carts. All residents will be provided a 96-gallon wheeled cart for storage and collection of recyclables.  A collection schedule calendar will be provided at a later date.

The high-quality carts will be green with a hinged yellow lid, large wheels and comfortable handle making transport to the curb very easy.

An optional 64-gallon cart is readily available by request. In addition, a 35-gallon cart is available in very limited quantities. Residents are urged to keep in mind cart capacity should ideally be two weeks or more of household recyclables.

Cart dimensions are as follows:

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I place in the cart?

Household generated recyclables, including newspapers and inserts, magazines, catalogs, junk mail and envelopes, copy/computer paper, phonebooks, paperback books, paperboard, shredded paper (in clear plastic bag), flattened corrugated cardboard, cans (steel, tin, bimetal and aluminum), glass bottles and jars (clear or colored), plastic containers grades #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, and #7, such as water and soda bottles.

What do I do if I have extra material?

You can place extra refuse in cans or containers next to your cart on your service day.

What should I do with my 18-gallon bin(s)?

You may use them when you have extra materials you want to set out. If you wish to turn in your recycling bins to Waste Management, they will collect all bins presented at the curb the weeks of January 14 and 21, 2013 on your recycling pickup day.  Be sure the bin is empty and placed upside down at the curb.

Who owns the carts?

Waste Management owns the carts. If you move, the cart should be left at the home for the next resident. If your cart breaks or becomes damaged through normal wear and tear, Waste Management will repair or replace the cart. Contact Waste Management at 309/343-0256 for your service requests. Carts that are damaged by negligence or abuse will be replaced at the homeowner’s expense.
