The State of Illinois has amended the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act. Effective January 1, 2012 it is prohibited for anyone to dispose of any computer, computer monitor, television, printer, electronic keyboard, facsimile (FAX) machine, videocassette recorder (VCR), portable digital music player, video game console, electronic mouse, scanner, digital converter box, cable or satellite receiver, digital video disc (DVD) recorder or player, and small scale server in municipal waste that is intended for the landfill. Proper disposal at an approved electronics recycling center is required.

Galesburg residents and businesses have options already in place to dispose of electronics.

Residential—The Electronics Recycling Drop Off center will accept the electronics mentioned plus small appliances (no air conditioners or large appliances) free of charge. Bring items to 567 S. Farnham Street (Galesburg Transit garage) on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Businesses—Schedule a pick up by calling the Tri-County Regional Collection facility at 309/331-4782. There is a fee for this service based on the weight of the electronics collected.
