State reaches out to local economic development stakeholders

The city of Galesburg’s Global Strategies Director, Gary Camarano, attended the Illinois Office of Trade and Investment’s (OTI) Illinois Export Advisory Council meeting in Springfield on May 21, 2013. The meeting included State officials and local level Economic Development Stakeholders. Discussions centered on state export goals, and ways the OTI can assist at the local level to help businesses compete in today’s global economy. The OTI is part of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (IL DCEO), and is charged with increasing exports through direct technical assistance as well as building partnerships for export promotion.

While the state currently ranks as the Midwest’s top exporter and number five in the nation, Governor Pat Quinn has established the goal of doubling Illinois’ exports by 2014, as exports are seen as a key engine of economic growth for the state. Dan Goff, Deputy Director of the IL DCEO hosted the meeting and said, "Our goal is to help local U.S. exporters sell globally, and we are going to work closely with local stakeholders to achieve this goal. While the State has recently made significant progress in increasing exports we realize there is more to be done. Engaging our local partners and seeking their input is an important part of this process."

"I’m optimistic about the support we’re going to see from the State," Camarano said and added, "They were a big help in our 2012 Trade Mission to Indonesia and I feel very comfortable in continuing to work with them. They have proved themselves a reliable and committed partner. The city hosted a ‘Doing Business with Taiwan’ forum on May 30, and is attending a June 5 reception for an Indonesian Trade Mission in Chicago. We have seen interest from Central Asian and European countries in exploring commercial relationships with the region as a result of our higher profile in the global markets. I look forward to more good news in 2013 and 2014 for the region."

The city is readying the release of its ‘BRED for Global Competitiveness’ program which is designed to identify businesses in the region that are export ready and provide assistance for them in their efforts to compete globally. Trade Missions, business matchmaking and technical assistance are a few of the services the city’s Economic Development team and the EBI Network will be offering through this program.
