Structure Fire at 226 West North Street

Galesburg Fire Department was called out at 00:55 a.m. for a structure fire at 220 North West Street this morning. Central Station units arrived at 00:58 finding heavy smoke in the neighborhood between Academy and West Streets. All occupants were out on arrival. Smoke was pouring from the eaves of the 1 1/2 story structure and flames were showing at the back of the house on the first and second floors. The fire was knocked down in about 15 minutes but extension into the wall cavities and the attic took well over an hour to extinguish fully. There is extensive damage to the rear of the structure on both floors. It appears the fire originated in the 1st floor kitchen. The cause of hte fire is still under investigation.
