Galesburg, IL (May 30, 2020) The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 362 N. Broad Street at 2:45 a.m Saturday morning. The response included all three stations and the 11 personnel on duty. Enroute it was reported that an occupant was trapped on the second floor. A police officer attempted to make entry but could not due to heavy smoke conditions.
Once one scene crews discovered a 2 story, 5 unit apartment building with heavy smoke showing from every window and heavy flames on the North side. The Central Station crew entered with an attack line through a front door but were driven back by high heat. A second crew attacked the fire from the North side allowing the Central Station crew to re-enter. Upon re-entry Acting Captain Kyle Harms and Firefighter Joe Brignall heard someone crying for help on the second floor. They dropped their attack line and using a thermal imaging camera proceeded up a stairwell through heavy smoke to find a 23 year old female and her dog. They were able to get her out of the structure and she was taken to the hospital by Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Services.
An emergency callback of the preceding shift was initiated and crews were used to rotate with fatigued crews on scene. The apartment building sustained heavy smoke and fire damage. The fire was completely under control by 4:08 a.m. 1-800-Boardup of the Quad Cities was on scene for assistance.  The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
