Galesburg, IL (October 20, 2020) The Galesburg Fire Department responded to two structure fires this morning. The first structure fire was reported at 2:35 am at a duplex at 839 Mulberry St. The response included all three stations and the 12 personnel on duty. Fire was showing from a front bedroom window upon arrival and it was reported that all occupants were out. Battalion Chief David Farrell assumed command and the Brooks St. Station fire crew pulled an attack line and quickly got the fire under control. The Fremont St. Station fire crew did find and rescue a dog during search efforts. Fire damage was contained to the bedroom and there was smoke damage throughout the structure. The cause of the fire was incendiary and is under investigation by Galesburg Fire Department investigators and Galesburg Police Department Detectives.
The second structure fire was reported at 3:33 am at 830 Liberty St. just as the Central Station fire crew were returning to their station. The Fremont and Brooks St. Station fire crews were still on scene at the Mulberry St. fire and responded from there. Enroute it was reported that flames were showing from the structure. Upon arrival heavy fire was showing through the roof at the rear of the home. Battalion Chief Farrell assumed command and the Central Station fire crews pulled two attack lines, one to attack the fire and one to protect nearby homes. Through the coordinated efforts of arriving units the fire was brought under control and extinguished.
An emergency callback of the preceding shift was initiated to provide emergency coverage for the city during the Liberty St. fire. Both fires are under investigation at this time.
